"He always wins": that's how the Gazzetta effectively defines Pogacar, The Sun King. Although: wasn't it July 14th with the storming of the Bastille?... Certainly, the way Tadej descended on Carapaz "at triple speed is impressive. The umpteenth show of the world champion had begun shortly before, and would conclude in the usual way: victory by a large margin, yellow jersey locked down after just ten stages" writes Ciro Scognamiglio, reporting the Slovenian's words about the jeering he received: "those who booed me gave me strength".
In Geo&Geo style there's Marco Bonarrigo in the Corriere, who recalls: "Ethologists claim that tigers have an extraordinary long-term memory of those who endanger their lives or supremacy. Two years ago, 11th stage of Tour no. 111, at Le Lioran (Massif Central) Tadej Pogacar was beaten in a sprint by his arch-rival Vingegaard". Taddeo, with excellent memory, though it's a good thing databases exist to update the count of his victories: striking, on the "remote slope of wild Cantal", the series of numbers that Cosimo Cito recalls in Repubblica (24th victory at the Tour, the 124th in his career, the 16th of the season in 26 days of racing). To be continued.
The opening of Stefano Scacchi in La Stampa establishes a concept: "It's a dominance that feeds itself with the force of motivations extracted from every kilometer of road". Who knows if here in the heart of France the trains are running on time? Pier Augusto Stagi in il Giornale puts it this way: "He arrives like a TGV, but for Tadej Pogacar there also come some whistles and some boos, a classic for someone who wins so much and with disarming consistency. He takes jersey number 60 Taddeo (ahead of him are only Hinault at 70 and Merckx at 111, editor's note) and he takes a finish line that two years ago had proven indigestible to him".
On L'Equipe, finally, in the valley of tears of the national football team, Alexandre Roos spotted Pogacar's special celebration at the finish line: "a weight lifting, a veil of bitterness fading and the memory of a defeat suffered in that very spot two years earlier being erased". The tiger with a good memory.
GAZZETTA DELLO SPORT
HE ALWAYS WINS
The summit of Col de Pertus, the penultimate climb of the day positioned 14 km from the Le Lioran finish, is approaching. Richard Carapaz is in the lead, no latecomer: 2019 Giro d'Italia, 2021 Olympic gold, a great climber. But the way Tadej Pogacar descends on him at triple speed is impressive. The umpteenth show of the world champion had begun shortly before, and would conclude in the usual way: victory by a large margin, yellow jersey locked down after just ten stages. All this on the day of the French national holiday, amid the customary popular enthusiasm and also some signs of disapproval, for the first time. (Ciro Scognamiglio)
CORRIERE DELLA SERA
THE TIGER POGACAR ERASES BAD MEMORIES AND HITS THE TRIFECTA
Ethologists claim that tigers have an extraordinary long-term memory of those who endanger their lives or supremacy. Two years ago, 11th stage of Tour no. 111, at Le Lioran (Massif Central) Tadej Pogacar was beaten in a sprint by his arch-rival Vingegaard. In theory nothing serious: Pogi maintained the yellow jersey and won that Tour by a landslide. But the memory of the "tremendous fatigue on Col de Pertus and the shattered legs at the finish line" remained etched in his memory. (Marco Bonarrigo)
REPUBBLICA
POGACAR DOMINATES IN THE HEAT, NOT EVEN JEERS STOP HIM: "THEY GAVE ME STRENGTH"
Looking at them one by one in the face at the finish is worth more than the standings, than a report, than the highlights of a stage that was decided in just a few meters, the last 1000 of Col du Pertus, a remote slope of wild Cantal. Pogacar left them all behind and sped away to claim his 24th victory at the Tour, the 124th in his career, the 16th of the season in 26 days of racing. His face was relaxed, he barely sweated. (Cosimo Cito)
LA STAMPA
POGACAR DROPS EVEN THE FANS WHO JEER: "THEY CHARGE ME UP"
It's a dominance that feeds itself with the force of motivations extracted from every kilometer of road. Tadej Pogacar continues to annihilate every opposition without settling for the obvious chronometric observation of his fifth Tour de France almost in the safe after less than a week and a half. The Slovenian achieved his third stage victory in ten fractions, adding another 44" to his advantage in the general classification over Jonas Vingegaard, now 3'36" behind and appearing particularly in difficulty at the Le Lioran finish. (Stefano Scacchi)
IL GIORNALE
THE "TRAIN" POGACAR BEATS EVEN THE JEERS AND BOOS OF THE FANS
He arrives like a TGV, but for Tadej Pogacar there also come some whistles and some boos, a classic for someone who wins so much and with disarming consistency. He takes jersey number 60 Taddeo (ahead of him are only Hinault at 70 and Merckx at 111, editor's note) and he takes a finish line that two years ago had proven indigestible to him. In the furnace of the Massif Central, the world champion sends his rivals one by one to the corner. This time more than the desire to amaze there's the desire for revenge: "I've been thinking about this stage for a long time – admits the yellow jersey in the post-race – here Vingo beat me and I arrived with empty legs: I thank the enormous crowd on the course, even those who booed me, because it motivated me even more", explains the Slovenian who adds: "I won on the day of the storming of the Bastille: I think I honored the yellow jersey in the best possible way". (Pier Augusto Stagi)
L'EQUIPE
FATAL
There was a deep and sincere joy in the way he celebrated after crossing the finish line: not the mechanical celebration of an ordinary day – although that was precisely the impression that Tadej Pogačar continued to convey during the race, giving the idea of an inevitable outcome: suffering for others, an ordinary day for the executioner in the yellow jersey. Yet there was something more: a weight lifting, a veil of bitterness fading and the memory of a defeat suffered in that very spot two years earlier being erased – a rare occasion when he had failed to defend his advantage on Col de Peyresourde, ending up beaten in a sprint by Jonas Vingegaard; another rarity that, at the time, had made the combination of the two events so improbable. (Alexandre Roos)
IL FATTO QUOTIDIANO
BETWEEN ICE AND PSYCHOLOGISTS POGACAR WINS (ALWAYS)
Tour de France? Rather, Four de France. "Furnace of France". The heat wave infests the Grande Boucle, makes the asphalt boiling, burns the stages. To prevent the fires that were devastating the forests of the Eastern Pyrenees, the organizers invited fans to stay home, recommending maximum vigilance to the caravan. On Sunday, in the Corrèze region classified as "red alert", therefore on maximum alert, the stage was shortened by 30 kilometers: it started from... Malemort, a name that says it all. Even the "Cannibal" Pogacar, winner yesterday with disarming ease after seven climbs, said that the international calendar must be modified, as well as the start times, and anyway, he wouldn't race in extreme summer heat and in August.
