2025 was not an easy year for Jonas Vingegaard: the Danish rider revealed that he was on the verge of ending his experience with Visma Lease a Bike and even considering retiring from professional cycling.
He said this in an interview given to Christopher Roth and Stine Bjerre Mortensen, journalists from the Danish television broadcaster TV2, broadcast during the AftenTour program.
"Last year I told the team that if things continued the way they were, I could no longer be part of it. And that's also why we changed some things within the team. The team realized I wasn't happy last year: they accepted the idea that we needed to change something and that's what we did".
This season, Jonas Vingegaard radically changed his racing schedule. As a brand new development, he chose to race the Giro d'Italia, which he also won, before the Tour de France. But it's especially the long training camps away from home that the Danish rider asked to limit: "Beyond the numerous race days, a season typically also includes several long training camps. In general, I think teams should look more at the individual rider and understand what works best for him. As a cyclist, you're forced to be constantly on a diet. You always have to think about your weight and you're always training. A lot is demanded of you. This puts a strain on both your body and your mind".
And further: "For cycling to become a sustainable sport again, the direction to follow is probably to create individual programs for all riders. If it's difficult to be away from racing for so long, then you need to do something different, and that's what we did for me this year. Now I'm much happier to be a cyclist".
