Isaac Del Toro wins his first stage at the Tour de France thanks to a generous gesture from his team leader Tadej Pogacar, who stepped aside at the finish line to honor his young heir apparent. Behind them, Jonas Vingegaard, who struggled somewhat to keep pace with his two rivals in a truly spectacular finale.
The Tour does not disappoint expectations, and above all, UAE Emirates XRG does not disappoint, as the team took control of the race on the Barcelona circuit and dominated proceedings.
THE RACE. The day's breakaway was launched by three bold riders: Felix Engelhardt (Jayco AlUla), Frank Van den Broek (Picnic PostNL) and Alex Molenaar (Caja Rural). Their maximum advantage reached just over three and a half minutes, but the peloton began to close the gap as they approached the first climb of the day, the Col de Begues. On this category 2 climb, Van den Broek was caught while Molenaar and Engelhardt passed the summit in that order with just 25 seconds advantage over the main group. Their effort ended at km 135, precisely when the group entered the final Barcelona circuit.
It was McNulty who set the pace for two of the three circuit laps and two of the three climbs up Montjuic, whittling down the group of contenders kilometer after kilometer, with riders like Vauquelin and Tiberi losing contact early on.
Tension and adrenaline at high levels, with an inevitable crash already at km 6: down were Kelland O'Brien (Jayco AlUla), Aaron Gate (XDS Astana), Silvan Dillier (Alpecin Premier Tech), Biniam Girmay (NSN), Dorian Godon (Ineos Netcompany), Maxim Van Gils (Red Bull Bora), Anthon Charmig (Uno X) and Robbe Dhondt (Picnic PostNL). All got back up and, though at different times, rejoined the group.
