It will be a lineup that will try to attack and be a protagonist on every terrain, the one selected by Caja Rural-Seguros RGA for its historic first participation in the Tour de France. Invited (somewhat surprisingly) by A.S.O., the Spanish team has indeed selected eight men with the credentials to make the white and green colors shine throughout all race days and, potentially, put themselves in a position to dream of a stage victory that would have enormous significance in their history.
The only one of those selected who will be able to rely on some experience on the roads of the most important race in the world will be Fernando Gaviria who, strong with thirteen top 10 finishes achieved this season and two career participations in the Grande Boucle, will have the full support of his teammates in sprint finishes where, as demonstrated by his two stage victories in 2018, he has already shown in the past that he knows how to make his mark.
In these final kilometers, supporting the ambitions of the Colombian sprinter will be especially the Dutchman (but with residence in Catalonia) Alex Molenaar, the 2023 Czech time trial champion Jakub Otruba, the only Italian in the race Stefano Oldani and the reigning Spanish road vice-champion (as well as the "super combative" rider from the last Vuelta España) Joel Nicolau who will act as race director: all four, once they have fulfilled their support duties for Gaviria, will then have their chances to seek personal glory by launching themselves into various breakaways of the day and, especially in the case of the Milan-based rider, trying to perform well in reduced group finishes.
Instead, they will be more focused on climbing and high mountain stages Abel Balderstone (13th in the general classification at the 2025 Vuelta and always with Caja Rural), the winner of the last Tour of Turkey Sebastian Berwick who will present himself at the start in Barcelona strong with the fifth place obtained at the Tour of Slovenia, and José Félix Parra who, after two career participations in the Vuelta and the 9th place finish in the general classification of the last Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, will also try at the Tour de France to excel when the road presents the steepest gradients.
"We are truly enthusiastic about this great opportunity for the team. Participating in the Tour de France is a source of enormous pride and we want to repay the trust that A.S.O. has placed in us by giving our best every day and remaining faithful to our racing style" explained sports director José Miguel Fernández.
"The selection of the eight final riders was probably the most difficult we have ever had to face. The level demonstrated by the team throughout the entire season has been very high and we are aware that some riders, for their performances and qualities, would have deserved to be part of this formation. This says a lot about the group we have built" continued the Spanish sports director.
"We tried to put together a very balanced team, with climbers capable of shining in high mountains and, at the same time, a solid group capable of being protagonists in the breakaways that will characterize the flat stages and those of medium mountain. Furthermore, we will face the sprint finishes with great confidence with Fernando Gaviria: we know that this is one of cycling's greatest challenges, but Fernando already knows what it means to win at the Tour, and our objective will be to support him in the best possible way so that he can fight for victory" promised Fernández.
"Being at the start in Barcelona rewards the work, commitment and consistency of many years. We have worked hard to get here and the entire team will face this Tour with enormous enthusiasm and motivation. We want to enjoy this unique opportunity, race with ambition and demonstrate, in the world's greatest race, the level and identity of this team".
