Another tragedy on the road, another cyclist who loses his life. And this time it hurts even more because we're talking about a young boy. Unfortunately, the 11-year-old boy who was struck by a garbage truck while riding his bicycle in Reggio Emilia shortly after 2 p.m. did not survive.
The death of the Italian minor was declared at the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova hospital, where he arrived in critical condition. According to reports, a paramedic who was off-duty was present at the scene and attempted to perform CPR and resuscitation maneuvers. An ambulance then arrived and rushed him to the hospital, but the boy did not make it. The boy had just finished elementary school.
COMMUNITY IN SHOCK. "Following the tragic accident, the 'Summer Dance Show' event, scheduled for this evening in Piazza Prampolini, has been cancelled. The cancellation is ordered as a sign of mourning and solidarity with the family of the deceased child and all his loved ones," the municipal administration announced.
"With immense sorrow, I learned of the tragedy that struck our community a few hours ago: an eleven-year-old child lost his life while riding his bicycle, struck by a garbage truck on our streets," writes Reggio Emilia's mayor, Marco Massari.
"There are no words that can ease the void left by the loss of such a young life. While awaiting clarification of the circumstances of what happened, on behalf of the entire city, I expressed just moments ago my deepest condolences to the family, which I extend to friends and all those who knew and loved this boy. This is a tragedy that must make us all reflect—institutions and citizens alike."
Especially since, as can be seen in the photo, the arrow on the right side of the roadway indicates what "should be" the bike lane.
