ELISA LONGO BORGHINI 10 WITH HONORS. Yet another example, the umpteenth one provided by the Italian champion, of what it means to never give up, set yourself an objective and achieve it. Today the objective, by Elisa's own admission, was simply to win. As soon as the opportunity presents itself she jumps onto Vollering and Van der Breggen's wheels and then also follows Niedermaier and Fisher-Black and with them drives the action that effectively characterizes the stage. In the final kilometers Vollering catches up with the trio and plays for the Giro. Here too, not a single mistake from Longo Borghini who fuels the action, makes regular pace changes right up until just before the finish line when Fisher-Black launches the sprint but Elisa passes her and celebrates. A cry of joy for her 60th career victory and for fourth place in the general classification. A liberating cry.
DEMI VOLLERING 10 WITH HONORS. After the Vuelta and the Tour she takes the Giro d'Italia: triple crown like Van Vleuten. It wasn't easy to overturn the "pink race" on the final stage, Demi did it by taking risks. She did it with an acceleration after fifty kilometers of racing and then with another burst towards the Colletta Brondello climb. She flies, reaches the breakaway riders and pedal stroke after pedal stroke gains seconds and forces Van der Breggen to surrender. For her the pink jersey and the blue jersey, for FDJ United – SUEZ three stage victories in nine days of racing.
ANTONIA NIEDERMAIER 9. She too has nothing to lose so she attacks. In the breakaway with the classification contenders she then decides to attack on her own: a move that perhaps some rivals underestimate. Before you know it, Longo Borghini and Fisher-Black are on her wheel and with them she builds a significant advantage that allows her to gain on her direct rivals. For several kilometers she's also the virtual pink jersey wearer. Antonia finishes the "pink race" with three stage podiums, second place in the general classification and second position in the climbers' classification. A decidedly good balance sheet for CANYON//SRAM.
ISABELLA HOLMGREN 6.5. The Canadian from Lidl Trek pays a bit for yesterday's efforts, loses contact with the best riders and arrives at the Saluzzo finish line over six minutes behind the winner. She loses three positions in the general classification but doesn't miss the opportunity to step on the podium: the white jersey for best young rider is hers. We'll see her again.
ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN 8. The fifth Giro d'Italia slips away from her by a whisker, just as happened at the Vuelta Espana Femenina. The 36-year-old from the Netherlands today responds to the attacks of rivals who want to put her in difficulty. She tries to control, attempts to close the gap with Niedermaier when the German challenges her pink jersey, blocks some of Dickson's surges but nothing can stop Vollering's progression as she escapes. Today she was missing a bit of reactivity and the help of Cavallar.
MARLEN REUSSER 5. She was one of the favorites but this definitely wasn't her Giro: second in the Nevegal time trial then she always tried to limit the damage. With plenty of experience but fewer legs. Yesterday sixth on Colle delle Finestre, today at the finish line over 14 minutes back. Much suffering and many positions lost in the classification.
NIAMH FISHER-BLACK 7.5 The New Zealand rider from Lidl Trek doesn't lack experience, after Niedermaier's attack she understands it's time to dare and together with her former teammate Longo Borghini catches up with the German. Regular pace changes and maximum collaboration for the 25-year-old from Nelson who spends practically the entire stage in the breakaway and on the final straight throws caution to the wind seeking victory. She sees the Italian champion pass her but still gains positions: she closes the Giro in fifth place. Applause for her and for her entire team.
FEMKE DE VRIES 7. In the thick of the action for many kilometers, the Dutch rider in yellow and black, suffers, loses contact and then returns on the wheel of her compatriot in the pink jersey. She'll stay with her and then pass her at the finish line. Balance of her Giro: four stage placings and sixth place in the final classification.
ELISA BALSAMO 8. She arrives on her home roads in a stage that is certainly not designed for her, but she arrives in the red jersey and with four victories in her palmares. The disqualification of Wiebes, let's not deny it, offered her a great opportunity and the Piedmont rider was surgical in exploiting it to the best: four victories are many, they give morale and certainly relaunch a season that so far had been mixed.
