A double strike by Matteo Fabbro on the queen stage of the Tour of Japan 2026, the Fuji Speedway-Mount Fuji covering 62 kilometers. Breaking away solo just one and a half kilometers from the finish, the thirty-one-year-old Friuli rider of Solution Tech NIPPO Rali crossed the finish line of the iconic Japanese climb in first position with about thirty seconds ahead of his teammate Kamiel Bonneu and just under a minute ahead of Argentine Li Ning Star's Eduardo Sepúlveda.
Fundamental in securing what is the second seasonal success for the Udine-based rider following the fourth stage of the Tour of Sharjah won in January was precisely the contribution of the Belgian ex-Intermarché rider: breaking away as a pair along the first steep ramps of the concluding climb, the two first went on to catch up together at the -4.6 km mark from the summit the Australian of Terengganu Cycling Team Fergus Browning (the last survivor of the morning's breakaway which also featured, among others, Alessandro Iacchi, Matias Malmberg of Swatt Club and the ever-active Nils Sinschek) and then carved out an insurmountable gap with all other rivals for the general classification, putting an important mortgage, with two stages remaining, on the green jersey.
Nothing to do, in this regard, for former leader Tommaso Dati (Team UKYO) who, as could be expected, was unable to keep pace with the furious Solution Tech duo on the grueling final climb, thus surrendering the symbol of leadership. However, thanks to the three victories achieved in the previous five days, the native of Camaiore easily retained first place in the points classification and tomorrow, in the more straightforward Hashimoto Park-Toriihara Park stage of 108.8 kilometers, will once again be among the men in contention for the stage victory.
