Un Filippo Ganna in versione super deluxe ha letteralmente stracciato la concorrenza nella cronometro Viareggio-Massa valida come decima tappa del Giro d’Italia 2026. Coprendo infatti i 42 chilometri della prova odierna a una media di 54,921 km/h, il campione nazionale contro il tempo ha fatto registrare un 45’53” che gli ha consentito di conquistare l’ottava frazione della carriera alla Corsa Rosa rifilando ben 1'54" al compagno di squadra Thymen Arensman (2°) e 1'59" a Remi Cavagna (Groupama FDJ United), terzo.
Così facendo il detentore del Record dell’Ora nonché due volte iridato contro il tempo, prima di oggi a segno l’ultima volta sulle strade del Grand Tour nostrano nel 2024, ha arrotondato a quaranta il numero delle vittorie personali ottenute da professionista ed eguagliato Eddy Merckx a quota sette affermazioni nelle cronometro individuali al Giro (davanti a tutti, con 13, c’è sempre Francesco Moser), un dato questo che rende bene l’idea dell’impatto avuto dal piemontese in questa manifestazione nelle prove contro le lancette.
Altrettanto valida, anche se non sufficiente per contendere la vittoria al compagno di squadra della Netcompany INEOS, è stata la prestazione di Thymen Arensman che, facendo sua la piazza d’onore, non solo ha completato la doppietta del team britannico ma è anche risultato il migliore dei big risalendo al terzo posto della classifica generale al posto di uno spento Felix Gall (2’28” il passivo incassato dal corridore austriaco dall’olandese).
Come lui, hanno compiuto tre balzi in avanti pure Ben O’Connor (da 8° a 5°) e Michael Storer (da 10° a 7°), mentre addirittura sei sono state le posizioni guadagnate da un ottimo Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek) che, grazie al quinto posto al traguardo a 2’16” dal vincitore di giornata, è passato dalla 14ᵃ alla 6ᵃ posizione con un ritardo di 3’34” dal vertice della graduatoria. Il canadese però staziona adesso in una zona di classifica diventata, dopo oggi, molto corta visto che dal quarto posto di Gall al nono di un Giulio Pellizzari apparso in ripresa (e ora miglior azzurro a 3’36” da Eulalio) ballano appena 72 secondi, un divario che consente a tanti di tenere legittimamente alte le proprie ambizioni in vista delle restanti due settimane scarse di gara.
Più distanti invece sono i giovani Markel Beloki (sbarcato in top ten con una prova che gli è valso il 17° posto finale a 3’11” da Ganna) e Mathys Rondel, quest’ultimo il peggiore oggi fra chi attualmente occupa i primi quindici posti della classifica in virtù delle quattro posizioni perse al termine di una prova che l’ha visto incassare un passivo di 4’41” dal campione italiano contro il tempo.
