A terrible crash involving numerous riders occurred when there were 23 km remaining to the finish in the second stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia. Several riders from Team UAE Team Emirates XRG went down in the front positions - Baldato later stated that Marc Soler was the first to hit the ground - creating a terrible domino effect. Many athletes also collided with the guardrail, forcing medical personnel to intervene immediately.
Among the many riders who crashed were several general classification contenders such as Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) and Derek Gee (Lidl Trek). Particularly striking were the images featuring Adam Yates, visibly bleeding from his hands and especially his face. Also involved in the massive crash were Dries Van Gestel, Rem Cavagna, Mattia Bais, Edoardo Zambanini, Antonio Morgado, Corbin Strong, and Andrea Vendrame.
With ambulances busy attending to the injured riders, the race was neutralized for approximately 6 km.
Jay Vine and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) and Adne Holter (Uno X Mobility), visibly in pain from the start, were forced to withdraw. Unfortunately, Colombian Santiago Buitrago, team leader of Bahrain Victorious, was also forced to abandon the race and was taken to hospital for medical evaluation.
