While yesterday evening Unibet Rockets announced that Groenewegen is perfectly able to continue the Giro d'Italia and pursue sprint victories, things have not gone as well for Matteo Moschetti: the 1996-born rider from Robecco sul Naviglio is one of the riders who came off worst from the massive crash 600 metres from the finish line yesterday in Burgas and this morning Pinarello Q36.5 announced that he won't continue the race. A concussion has been diagnosed and, in compliance with the UCI's "concussion protocol", the medical staff of the Swiss ProTeam has decided to send the athlete home to allow him to recover peacefully.
This is the comment from sports director Gabriele Missaglia released by the team: «For us and for our sprinter it's truly a great disappointment, especially considering how much he cares about the Giro, but the absolute priority is the athlete's health. These protocols exist for a reason and must be fully respected.»
Moschetti's withdrawal, which therefore appears as DNS in the second stage starting in an hour, is the first retirement of the 109th edition of the corsa rosa.
