Jonas Vingegaard claimed his first stage victory at Paris-Nice and at the Uchon finish line, the end of the fourth stage, he also donned the yellow jersey as race leader. Today was a very complicated stage due to the cold and rain, which put the peloton in difficulty and once again crashes were not lacking. Ayuso, who had been the race leader for just one day, also hit the ground and was forced to abandon the race. The Dane was always at the front and once he was left with Dani Martinez and Tim Van Dijke, in the final kilometer he attacked and then crossed the finish line alone.
«We expected a crazy day, but certainly not how it turned out today. We also had a plan. We wanted to try to attack on the penultimate climb, but then everything happened».
Ayuso today would have liked to attack and win, after yesterday's second place, but he hit the ground and was forced to climb into the team car, retiring. «From the start it was a race at full speed and it went on like that all day. There wasn't even time to change clothes. I was forced to race with those miner's braces on, but there wasn't time to take anything off».
The two-time Tour de France winner is referring to the double shorts he was wearing during the race to protect himself from the rain, characterized by large braces that went over his jersey. «But my legs were there and I felt really good and I was good all day and I want to thank my teammates, but in particular I want to give special thanks to Edoardo Affini, who did a really great job for me».
Affini today was one of the men closest to Vingegaard and helped him stay away from any dangers during the race.
«Edoardo was with me for most of the day and did an excellent job, particularly at the beginning when everything was really very hectic. I'm just happy to be here and to have won the stage. It's incredible and in a way it's also a kind of redemption after what happened last year».
2025 was complicated for the Dane due to a series of injuries that forced him to retire during last year's Paris-Nice. «It's a bit like sweet revenge after what happened last year, when I had to abandon the race and I also had the yellow jersey as leader. It's really nice to start the season this way, especially considering that today was difficult because of the crosswind that accompanied us throughout the race and the rain. I think many guys were cold. Personally, I wasn't cold because I was well covered and now I'm happy with this result».
Yesterday's stage didn't go well for Visma-Lease a Bike and in the team time trial they had lost quite a bit of time to their rivals, finishing in fourth place.
«We lost some time, but we can't change things, and we just have to do our best and see what we can do now. Yesterday we didn't do our best in the team time trial, but we know that in the future we can do better, and that's something we need to talk about, of course. Today is a new chapter and we just need to focus on that».
