Mourning in the cycling world for the passing of former Veronese professional Giorgio Menini. He was 89 years old and was born on January 9, 1937 in Minerbe, also in the province of Verona, and raced in the top category from 1958 to 1962, achieving three important victories.
The news of Giorgio Menini's passing, which occurred on the morning of Saturday, February 21 at his home, was announced by his former teammate Renato Giusti and the promoter of the Prestigio d'Oro Alè, Agostino Contin.
Menini, who had raced for San Pellegrino, Ignis and the Dutch team Caballero before returning to San Pellegrino, was a great friend of Gino Bartali and of Giusti himself.
"I went to visit him at home a few days ago - Renato Giusti said with emotion - we had known each other since we were 14 years old because we lived in Minerbe. Menini had also won an Italian Championship and was the protagonist of many beautiful and interesting races as an amateur. When he stopped racing, he worked in his family's carpentry business but had been ill for the last ten years. He had built a wonderful family and after his wife's passing, he devoted himself exclusively to their only son. I also remember him for having raced together as a junior in Veronella in 1955, where I finished first in the sprint and he finished second. I remember that he raced with San Pellegrino and Ignis and also alongside Ercole Baldini. He was a person who was well-liked and of extreme kindness, and I am very sorry for his passing".
The date of his funeral has not yet been announced and will only be known in the coming hours.
To honor his memory, we resubmit the article that our Marco Pastonesi had dedicated to him on these pages.
