A sprint was always going to happen, and it did at the end of the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve 2026. Starting from Vila Real de Santo António and covering 183 kilometers, the stage concluded with a vibrant group sprint, from which Paul Magnier emerged victorious, successfully beating Jordi Meeus (Red Bull - BORA – hansgrohe) and Pavel Bittner (Picnic PostNL), thus giving the Soudal Quick-Step team their first joy of the season.

The victory, the twenty-fifth of his career for the native of Laredo, also earned the Frenchman the first leader's jersey of the short Portuguese stage race, a race which tomorrow, with the uphill finish at Fóia, will likely see him surrender the leadership.

THE RACE

About ten kilometers after the start, the day's breakaway took shape. It consisted of Noah Campos (Team Tavira / Crédito Agrícola), Enzo Leijnse (Anicolor / Campicarn), Joao Silva (Feira dos Sofás – Boavista), Tomas Contte (Aviludo - Louletano – Loulé), Bruno Silva (Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua), Jose Miguel Moreira and André Ribeiro (GI Group Holding - Simoldes – UDO), Diogo Narciso (Credibom / LA Alumínios / Marcos Car) and Viacheslav Ivanov (Feirense – Beeceler) who, after breaking away, maintained a lead of between 2 and 2.5 minutes in the following kilometers.

Behind them, Soudal Quick-Step of Magnier took control, without too much difficulty preventing the gap from growing and then, once they tackled the Marcador GPM (where Narciso dropped but rejoined his companions on the descent), increased the pace to reduce a significant portion of the advantage gained by the attackers.

Reduced to eight after Joao Silva's crash, the breakaway was left with just about twenty seconds to manage, a situation that in the peloton prompted Hugo Nunes (Credibom / LA Alumínios / Marcos Car) to attempt to bridge the gap solo, while at the front, the breakaway riders began to lose their cooperation.

On the slopes of Faz Fato, a series of accelerations allowed Contte, Leijnse and Ivanov to gain an advantage over the rest of the group and cross the summit with 25 seconds over Narciso, Moreira and the returning Nunes, who, finding good collaboration, managed to close the gap to the leading trio in the subsequent descent and flat sections, forming a new six-rider group.

Meanwhile, the peloton, which had again gained over a minute's distance, saw the Alpecin-Premier Tech riders of Philipsen take control of the chase and quickly reduced the gap to about thirty seconds. Feeling the group breathing down their necks, Nunes then attacked solo thirty kilometers from the finish, but his action was short-lived and he was definitively caught back into the ranks as they approached the three consecutive intermediate sprints of the "golden kilometer".

Compact again, the group sped towards the anticipated group sprint, which was prepared without problems in the 20 long kilometers before the finish. In the end, Paul Magnier prevailed over Meeus, Bittner, and a disappointed Philipsen, consequently allowing Soudal Quick-Step to remove the zero from their season's victory column.
