Remco Evenepoel won the time trial of the Vuelta Comunitat Valenciana, but did not become the general classification leader. The wind was too strong, forcing the organizers to neutralize the stage, and thus Biniam Girmay remained in the yellow jersey.
"Even though the time was neutralized, I felt the same sensation as a normal time trial" - Evenepoel said after the race - "I gave my all for the victory and succeeded".
Time trial bikes were not used, and the classic road bikes did not have the typical time trial extensions. An important upheaval for someone like Evenepoel, who is very demanding when it comes to equipment.
"Reviewing all the equipment was not very frustrating. The wind was really strong. I think it will calm down a bit towards the end of the day, but in the end we must respect the choices that were made. I believe there have been enough serious incidents due to bad weather conditions. So we can only respect the choice and make the best of it, and I think we did. Did I find the race dangerous? No".
In the 17 km from Carlet to Alginet, some riders decided to ride calmly, while others, despite the wind, decided to do the time trial as if there was no time neutralization. Remco Evenepoel raced like a bullet over the 17 km course and even when crossing the most exposed sections, where the wind was strong, the Belgian never slowed down, setting the best time of the day.
"I did not find the road dangerous at all. I understand that it was dangerous to go fast on the bike and I can say that there were moments during reconnaissance when I struggled to maintain control of the bike, but later in the race it was safer". Regarding the choice made by the organizers, Remco Evenepoel is certain that rider safety must always come first. "I thought it was a shame to neutralize the stage, but as I just said, we must respect the choice. I believe Marc Soler was responsible for the final decision. So I think all teams agreed and everyone had the same opportunity to race. So we decided to continue racing with the general classification frozen. This is still a preparation race, so what matters most to us is to continue doing our tests".
In the end, Red Bull - Bora Hansgrohe secured first and second place, with Remco Evenepoel and Aleksandr Vlasov. "I'm happy, we finished first and second, so it was a good choice. Do we need to review our tactics after this day? No, in the end the guys in front of me will continue to go fast. Tomorrow will be a transition day and we'll see what we can do".
