A total of 19 teams will take part in the 63rd edition of the Eschborn-Frankfurt, the German classic that, as has been continuously happening since 1968 (with the only exception of 2021), will open the racing calendar of the month of May.
However, only 16 of the 18 World Tour licensed teams will compete for victory in the race won in 2025 by Michael Matthews ahead of Magnus Cort and Jon Barrenetxea, as both Groupama-FDJ United and XDS-Astana have simultaneously decided not to participate in the Teutonic event.
Both teams, by acting in this way, have availed themselves of the new regulation inserted in the UCI rules that, from this year, grants the top-tier teams the possibility of skipping a World Tour event per year (excluding Grand Tours and Monument classics where participation remains absolutely mandatory) which, according to the regulations, cannot be selected simultaneously by more than four teams and cannot be opted for by each team more than once within the current three-year period.
In the specific case of Eschborn-Frankfurt, it is not the first time that the German race, placed in the calendar a few days before the Giro d'Italia and in the same week as the Tour de Romandie, has been sacrificed by World Tour representatives, as in recent times, in 2025 (last year of the previous three-year period), Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, Visma Lease a Bike, INEOS Grenadiers and again Groupama-FDJ had opted not to line up at the start.
In 2027, however, according to the new provisions, it is certain that both Alexandre Vinokurov's team and Thierry Corvec's, after the forfeit of next May, will return to the event in Germany, where other teams will potentially be absent.
