Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe is ready for an important event that opens the new season. At the Trofeo Ses Salines in Spain, Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz will make their seasonal debut. This will be their first race together as teammates and they will face a team time trial, a useful test ahead of the team time trial at the Tour de France.
Starting the season with a team time trial is something special. In a road race, you usually have several hours of racing before getting into the final action towards the finish line. Here, instead, you start at full speed with about 25 minutes of intense effort and leg pain is guaranteed. Team time trials are a rarity in the cycling calendar, but this year they take on a particularly important meaning in view of the Tour de France. In fact, on July 4th, the Grande Boucle will start in Barcelona with a team time trial and the Trofeo Ses Salines will be a good opportunity to test materials and compare with other teams. In addition to Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz, the Red Bull - Bora hansgrohe lineup also includes Mattia Cattaneo, Nico Denz, Gianni Moscon and Maxim Van Gils. This time Lorenzo Finn will also be in the team, who is part of the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe Rookies. For the Ligurian, this race will be useful to gain experience in the World Tour team.
"Before the start of a team time trial, you don't have time to think about how hard it will be and this could even be an advantage," said Evenepoel. "Preparation is crucial and we have invested a lot of time. I think we are well prepared."
These will be days to follow closely in Spain because the Belgian will race for the first time with Red Bull - Bora Hansgrohe, which has invested heavily in his future.
"I am the type of rider who improves by racing, this is actually the right approach. The course should suit a rider like me well: it's good and varied terrain, always a bit challenging. On Saturday we also have Puig Major, with a long climb. I can find a bit of everything and get some answers about how my winter preparation went."
For the German Lipowitz, this will also be an important test, not only because he can see his physical preparation but also because for the first time he will race in the same team with Evenepoel, a time trial specialist.
"This is an important day, but not the most important of the season. It's no secret that we are here to prepare for the Tour de France. If we can draw the right conclusions for July, it will be acceptable to make mistakes now. This is not the stage where everything must be perfect."
