The new year begins under the banner of Mathieu van der Poel, who once again puts his signature on the classic Sven Nys Grand Prix in Baal, Belgium, confirming himself as the absolute dominator of world cyclocross. The Dutch superstar from Alpecin-Deceuninck took control of the race midway through, when he managed to drop Belgian rider Verstrynge, who eventually finished second at the finish line. Completing the podium was local hero Thibau Nys, welcomed by the cheers of the Belgian crowd.
An excellent performance also by Italian Filippo Fontana, who finished seventh, 2'27" behind the world champion: a significant result in a high-level race.
