Remco Evenepoel detailed his program and intentions during the press conference held by Red Bull - Bora Hansgrohe in Spain. A sort of debut with his new colors, where he shed light on some points that were not yet clear, such as the Giro-Tour double and the Tour of Flanders.
Regarding the Tour de France, Remco will have to share leadership with German Lipowitz, who stood on the third step of the podium in the last Grande Boucle behind Vingegaard and Pogacar. The choices made by Bora-Hansgrohe are the result of careful study, with the goal of obtaining the best possible result in the Grande Boucle. For the German team, the Giro-Tour combination was not an option this year, even though Remco found the 40 km time trial in the Giro very tempting.
"Whether to do the Giro or not was the most important point of discussion. I confess I liked the route with that time trial, also because it won't be the hardest Giro on paper. There are some difficult stages, but it won't be a monstrous Giro, there have been other harder editions".
The discussion then returned to a normal season, where the Ardennes Classics will have priority: for this reason, the Belgian will not participate in Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico, opting instead for the Volta a Catalunya in March. We also won't see him at the Brabant Arrow.
"Let's not forget that last year I missed about five or six months due to my accident. So it's positive to hope to get through an entire season without physical problems and then I want to make some progress, get to know the team and so on. And the choice not to do Giro and Tour also came because there will be the Worlds, which are a goal for me. Exactly a month and a half after the Tour, there's the World Championship in Canada: that's why we won't do crazy things this season. We've seen that the world championship route is really beautiful and we'll have two great opportunities, both in the time trial and road race. So I want to do well in both events. Ultimately, the team's ambition is to win as much as possible during the year".
Having Lipowitz on the team for Evenepoel is like having two important cards to play, and they will support each other during the yellow race. Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe will use the Volta a Catalunya (March 23-29) as a general rehearsal for the Tour de France, with shared leadership between Evenepoel and Lipowitz and a team that will resemble the Tour de France team as much as possible.
"It won't be the end of the world and I understand that this decision raises questions - Evenepoel explained referring to Lipowitz -: it's always better to have two leaders than one. If one of us has a bad day or gets sick, we'll have an alternative. Moreover, tactically it's more difficult for opponents to defend. I'm open to this possibility. We just have to wait and see what happens in the race".
