Australian para-cyclist Paige Greco, Paralympic gold medalist at Tokyo 2020, died yesterday due to a "sudden medical episode" at her home in Adelaide, South Australia, as announced by her family in a statement released by the national cycling federation, AusCycling.
"Paige meant everything to us. Her kindness, determination, and warmth accompanied us every day," her parents stated, thanking everyone for their support and expressing their pride in how their daughter represented Australia.
Greco, 28 years old, made history at the Tokyo Games by winning Australia's first-ever gold medal, setting a world record in the 3,000-meter individual race in the C1-C3 category. She also won two bronze medals in the road race and time trial, and in 2022 was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to sport.
Before dedicating herself to para-cycling, Greco competed in Paralympic athletics and attempted to qualify for the 2016 Rio Games, a goal that eluded her. Later, she moved to Adelaide to train at the South Australian Institute of Sport and pursue a degree in sports science.
Since her international debut in 2019, she has collected several world titles and records, along with numerous medals at world championships. This year, she won two bronze medals at the World Cup and World Road Championships, both held in Belgium.
