A lifetime in Samarate, near Busto Arsizio; the first steps in football with Vanzaghello; the cycling beginnings as young boys, two Junior years with Bustese Olonia (a club partnered with Ivan Basso, Fran and Alberto Contador's organization) then two seasons in Eolo/Polti Kometa U23, the 2025 campaign with the lombard Continental squad Biesse Carrera Premac, and now a return to the roots — turning Professional with a contract valid for 2026 and 2027.
It could be the sporting biography of one athlete, yet it's the story of two: 21-year-old twins Tommaso and Gabriele Bessega. Identical in appearance and in their cycling path, very similar both in their profile as powerful riders and in their results: in total, over three Under 23 seasons, Tommaso has 5 wins and Gabriele 3; and both took part in the TTT victory at the 2024 Vuelta a Madrid. After Benito, Giuliano, Crozzolo and Pesenti, they become the fifth and sixth new Polti VisitMalta signings.
T. Bessega: "I'm really happy to achieve such an important goal together with my twin, within a structure where we'll find again sports directors, staff members, and teammates such as Muñoz, Raccagni, Garchu and Giuliano. I also want to thank Basso and the Contador brothers, who believed in us even when we didn't perform at our best, and Giuseppe De Maria, who's been coaching us since our arrival at what was then Eolo Kometa U23 and never stopped following us, not even during this chapter with Biesse Carrera. We should also thank that team for allowing us to race in some professional events, giving us the chance to test ourselves against riders we'll soon be facing regularly with Polti VisitMalta."
G. Bessega: "This year I gave everything to earn my place in the professional ranks. I started strong and my consistency allowed me to be called back by those who first launched me. I'm beyond excited, also because it means returning to an environment I already know. I think that will help me especially in managing the transition to this new category. It will be demanding, but I can't wait to start the winter training! I fully share the general thanks to the team and the special gratitude to coach De Maria — we owe a lot of this achievement to him."
Ivan Basso, team principal Polti VisitMalta: "With these two riders, our process of developing young talent continues. Both have enormous potential and we're confident they'll be able to express it effectively, also thanks to the mutual knowledge we've built over time."
