The 2030 Winter Olympics could mark an important turning point: for the first time in France, the first medals for cross-country and cyclocross could be awarded. For years, there have been discussions about introducing cyclocross into winter Olympic sports, and Italy has also stepped in by hosting two Cyclocross World Cup stages in Vermiglio on snow-covered terrain.
The battle seems to be won: according to Sir Sebastian Coe, current president of World Athletics, in a recent interview he stated that there are good possibilities for new disciplines to enter the 2030 Winter Olympics.
There was also a meeting between Sir Coe and David Lappartient, UCI president: the two disciplines apparently share many common points, primarily the sharing of the same race course.
"I spoke with David about sharing the same course in 2030 with cyclocross, and that's exactly the direction we're thinking of going. We've already had some good conversations," Sir Coe said. "David agrees with me. Obviously, there would need to be a variation in the IOC statute, because Winter Games disciplines must involve snow and ice, and recently there hasn't been much of that in France. But we know that both cyclocross and cross-country are quintessentially winter sports."
Africa once again emerges as a topic: cross-country would provide an opportunity for African athletes to participate in the Winter Olympics, an event they essentially do not currently take part in.
Therefore, in 2030 there could be some significant changes within the new "Fit for the Future" plan of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), of which Coe is a member, and an opening to two disciplines that so far have not had the space they deserve under the five rings.
