The 85th Tour of Luxembourg opened under the banner of Romain Gregoire. With an incredibly long sprint that allowed him to repel Marijn van den Berg's assault, the young French rider from Groupama-FDJ conquered the inaugural stage, the Luxembourg-Luxembourg of 152.8 kilometers, toasting his fifth seasonal triumph.
Behind the 22-year-old Frenchman, the first leader of the event, and the Dutchman from EF Education-EasyPost, Marc Hirschi (Tudor Pro Cycling) completed the day's podium by finishing third in front of Andrea Vendrame (4th) and Tibor Del Grosso (5th), while Giacomo Ballabio (Hrinkow Advarics) managed to celebrate a good 8th place by staying in the wake of the leaders.
As predictable, on the same finish line that saw Mathieu van der Poel triumph last year, the decisive factor was a hard-fought sprint among the puncheurs and the most resistant sprinters, who, after saving precious energy during the stage animated by the long-distance attempt of André Carvalho (Efapel Cycling), Quentin Bezza (Wagner Bazin WB), Malte Hellerup (Team ColoQuick), Mats Berns (VC Unité Schwenheim), Mil Morang (Team Lotto Kern-Haus PSD Bank) and Andrea Pietrobon (Polti-VisitMalta) with the last two being caught 12 kilometers from the finish, could unleash all their horses in the final thousand meters that presented gradients between 4% and 8%.
