The events that occurred during the eleventh stage of the Vuelta a España 2025 have received international media attention, where the organizers were forced to end the stage three kilometers from the Bilbao finish line without declaring a winner, in order to safeguard the athletes in the race.
This decision, taken due to the extensive protests by pro-Palestinian demonstrators in the finish area, was explained through an official statement issued by the Spanish race's organization, which firmly reiterated that the priority was and remains ensuring the riders' safety.
"In light of the events that occurred during the first pass through the finish line of stage 11 of La Vuelta 25, which started and finished in Bilbao, the organization has decided to end the stage three kilometers before the finish line, using that point to set the times for the general classification. Likewise, it has been decided not to declare a stage winner or award points for the points classification, with only the points obtained at the mountain passes and the intermediate sprint being retained.
The safety and physical integrity of the riders are the absolute priority for the organization. In response to the events that took place during the stage - which we strongly condemn - this decision was made to protect all the riders. La Vuelta respects and defends the right to peaceful demonstration within the context of the event, but cannot tolerate any acts that put at risk the physical safety of the participants or any member of the race caravan.
All members of the organization will continue to work in close coordination with the authorities and the law enforcement agencies of the State and the various territories to ensure the safety and proper running of the race. Finally, the organization would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support in cheering on the riders throughout a region with such a deep-rooted cycling tradition, despite not being able to fully enjoy the entirety of the competition."
