Juan Ayuso won the seventh stage of the Vuelta a España with a finish in Cerler, erasing the bad images from yesterday, where he had lost 11 minutes to his rivals. After the team time trial and Jay Vine's victory, this is the third consecutive stage win for the United Arab Emirates team, and for Ayuso it is the fifteenth victory of his career.
"I suffered a lot in the first hour," Ayuso said after the finish line, "but I knew I had to get over Port de Cantó to be able to break away - if I hadn't attacked like this, they wouldn't have let me go later - but in the end I did a good job and managed to arrive alone and win".
These are 7 of Ayuso's victories this season, including a success at the Giro d'Italia, but winning a stage in his home race is a great emotion for him.
"It's incredible. After my success at the Giro, when I won my first stage in a grand tour, I felt some very beautiful emotions, but winning a stage here at the Vuelta is a different kind of emotion. This is my favorite race, and the way I won today is something I will remember forever and I'm truly proud of".
UAE Emirates is proving to be the strongest team in Spain. The first success came with the team time trial in Figueres, then yesterday Jay Vine won, and today Ayuso was the first to cross the finish line. The general classification is also going well, with Almeida third at 2'41" from Traeen and just 8" from Vingegaard, currently in second place.
"It's simply fantastic to have already won like this. The team time trial was very special because it's a victory for everyone equally, and yesterday Jay had a fantastic stage, winning in front of his wife and son, so it was really special. And then today my victory came. We don't have a sprinter, so I think we won't win tomorrow, but we hope we can continue like this".
