In the time trial from Loudenvielle to Peyragudes, we saw an extraordinary Tadej Pogacar: the Slovenian seemed to have arrived from another world, and only Jonas Vingegaard behind him managed to get close and breathe a sigh of relief.
"I feel more confident after yesterday. I think I can be satisfied with my performance. Probably this was my best performance ever".
It was just over 10 kilometers from Loudenvielle to Peyragudes, with the last three being truly challenging, with gradients up to 13%. Vingegaard performed excellently, but Pogacar managed to climb at an incredibly high speed.
"To be honest, Tadej was simply the strongest and deserved to win, so congratulations to him".
On Thursday, Vingegaard experienced one of the worst defeats of his career, while at Peyragudes he found his smile again, even though in the general classification his gap from the Slovenian is 4'07". "Certainly Thursday was a truly disappointing day. I hoped for something more, but in the end I was empty. I think it was probably one of my worst performances and yesterday instead one of the best. So, obviously it's nice to come back like this. I think I can at least be satisfied and can sincerely say I did everything possible".
In the time trial, not only was there Vingegaard's recovery, but also Matteo Jorgenson's comeback, who after the defeat on Hatacam managed to recover at Peyragudes.
"Yes, it's true, we both recovered. Thursday was a terrible day for both of us. Until the final climb I felt quite good, but then suddenly the lights went out, and being able to rediscover myself in such good form was nice, both for me and for Matteo, so we can say we are super happy". Jonas Vingegaard worked on himself in recent hours, with the awareness that what happened in the twelfth stage could not be normal. "Of course it was very disappointing, but I also know that the level I showed at Hautacam was not my normal level, so making this reflection, I did not lose confidence in myself. I think what you saw at Peyragudes in the race is the real Jonas Vingegaard. I just have to keep trying".
In Thursday's stage, perhaps the heat played a role, or perhaps the tactics adopted by Visma-Lease a Bike were not the right ones. "I don't think the problem was the heat. In this Tour I have had two negative days and I hope not to have any more. The Tour is far from over and we just have to keep trying, we must continue to believe we can do something important in the race. We have an incredibly strong team and we just have to prove it in the coming days".
