In this sixth stage of the Tour de France, Ben Healy of the EF Education-EasyPost team put on a spectacular performance. The twenty-four-year-old Irish rider had decided that this stage would be his, and so it was. Healy managed to join the breakaway that formed after two hours of racing, but he had decided not to stop and thus attacked 41 kilometers from the finish line. The other breakaway riders couldn't keep up with his pace, and when he realized he could make it, he continued to push on the pedals to increase his advantage. After attacking once again, the Irish rider remained alone and conquered his second stage victory in a grand tour, following his win at the 2023 Giro d'Italia.
"It's incredible, because this is what I've always worked for, not just this year, but throughout my entire career" - Healy said, very emotional after the stage - "This victory repays the countless hours of hard work by so many people. Today I managed to make my contribution, and it's fantastic. Last year was a turning point for me. I started to believe that winning an important victory was possible and I just had to stay calm and continue working hard. I tried to refine my racing style, I reviewed many videos. And today all this work has paid off."
In this Tour de France, the Irish rider hadn't particularly stood out, but he was waiting for the right moment to attack and claim his victory.
The Tour de France is a complicated race, where everyone tries to cross the finish line first, because when a rider wins a stage at the Tour, then his career completely changes.
"It wasn't easy, because the start of the stage was extremely competitive. Perhaps I pushed too hard to get into the breakaway, but that's how I race. We really had to fight to maintain our advantage. We struggled and pushed all day long. I knew I would have to go it alone and had to choose the right moment carefully. I believe my attempt came at the right time. I surprised everyone and this worked in my favor, and then, I just had to put my head down and give my all until the finish line."
Ben Healy had studied this stage down to the smallest details and had raced it many times in his mind, so today he was prepared. "I had marked this stage in red from the start of the Tour and even before. Managing to win it at the first real opportunity is incredible. Every cyclist dreams of winning a Tour stage since childhood. I grew up watching the Tour on television and as a child, I dreamed of being able to participate one day. Being here is already an achievement, but winning a stage is truly something exceptional."
