Yesterday was a gray day for Visma - Lease a Bike: it should have been a positive stage for Jonas Vingegaard and his teammates, who were counting on proving their strength. However, that was not the case, and only Edoardo Affini, with his third place, somewhat adjusted the situation. The gaps were significant, with the team's two leaders, Matteo Jorgenson and Jonas Vingegaard, clearly disappointing. The American did not find the right rhythm and finished eleventh, 1'19" behind the winner, while Jonas Vingegaard concluded his performance in thirteenth place, 1'21" behind Evenepoel.
"We will need to analyze the situation," a disappointed Jorgenson said after the race. "I gave my best, but we still need to understand what really happened. When I look at my watts and my feelings, I can only say that I gave my all. I managed my effort well and technically I felt comfortable. I didn't lose anything in the corners, so it must be an aerodynamic or power issue that we will need to analyze."
In this just-started Tour de France, Matteo Jorgenson has already demonstrated that he can compete with the best and occupies a good position in the general classification: he is fifth and hopes to improve further. "I felt good and I can say I was fast. I am satisfied with the watts I produced. The wind was stronger compared to the reconnaissance, but it was the same for all the classification riders, so that's not where we should look for the cause. This is the bike I've been training with since the beginning of the year. Were we surprised? I usually don't receive information about time gaps during time trials, but this time I can say that this is not the result we expected."
