Jonas Vingegaard does not give up in this Tour de France: even though the fourth stage was not supposed to suit him, when his rival Tadej Pogacar decided to attack, he did not back down and resisted. When the World Champion went on the offensive on the final climb of the day, Vingegaard was the only one to follow him, even though he almost lost some ground and managed to control the stress and remain calm.
On the eve of the fifth stage time trial, Vingegaard is just 8 seconds behind the Slovenian in the general classification.
"We are happy with how things are going" - Vingegaard said after the finish line - "I felt really good yesterday. I'm very happy to have managed to stay behind Pogacar on the climb. We are content with how the race is progressing".
Without a doubt, Vingegaard is the only rider who can currently challenge the world champion. The 33-kilometer time trial in Caen could reveal many things today, and other situations will become clearer when the real mountains arrive and the general classification riders will have to bring out all their qualities.
"I think I made one of the best attacks of my entire career, so I'm really happy with my performance. It once again demonstrates that I have increased my explosiveness. Tadej is racing incredibly well. He looked really strong and deserved the stage victory. UAE took command, and when this happens, you can have your plans, but the only thing you can do is try to keep pace".
The Dane looks optimistically towards the 33-kilometer time trial today. Considering what happened at the Dauphiné, Vingegaard should be ahead of the Slovenian, but we don't know if he has done any specific training in June to improve his time trial performance. "Obviously, this is not the most favorable time trial for me. I think it suits Remco and perhaps Pogacar better. But I will give my all. I've had good times this year, so I hope to deliver another good performance".
