Tuesday, June 3rd marks six years since the death of Fabrizio Fabbri, a remarkable cycling champion, both in skill, grit, character, and tenacity, and a splendid example as a human being. We spent many times in his company, and he was proud of his family, his wife Loretta, and his two sons Fabio and Francesco, both former riders, still involved in cycling today in different roles and capacities.
An exemplary family, with Fabrizio who after 10 years as a professional athlete and victorious on various occasions (including 9 Giro d'Italia participations with three stage wins and two excellent overall classifications) decided to spend another decade as a sports director for the Mapei team and amateur squads. After leaving active cycling, he always preserved unforgettable memories with athletes, having been a always-available domestique for Felice Gimondi and Francesco Moser. Even today, his memory remains alive in everyone, and the establishment of a Challenge with some amateur races in his name is another way to keep him among us.
