Matthew Brennan is just 19 years old and, after spending a season in the development squad of Team Visma-Lease a Bike, this year he made the big leap to the professional ranks. Yesterday he won the first stage of the Tour of Romandy and wore the leader's jersey, but this is just the latest success of this British talent. "I have no idea where my limits are, but I know I'm experiencing a truly exciting moment."
The finish line in Fribourg was decided by the fastest men, and the British rider proved to have the strongest legs. Everyone was waiting for something to happen in the last 10 kilometers, but no team wanted to take the initiative, and so the sprint ultimately decided the victory.
"Once we passed the last climb, I knew I had good legs and that we could make it to the end: the finale was quite chaotic, and it was a real challenge to choose the right wheel. I also arrived a bit further ahead than I expected, but in such a situation, you have to adapt."
With his new sprint victory, the young Visma-Lease a Bike rider continues to surprise the cycling world, because he has six victories since the start of the year. "Once again, a special moment has arrived. I don't know how far I could go. I don't think even my coaches know. We're still trying to discover my limits. It's a truly exciting moment."
Brennan is young but knows what he wants, and his desire now is to return home with another stage win at the Tour of Romandy. "Winning another stage at Romandy would be fantastic. And I hope to help Jorgen Nordhagen achieve his result in the general classification during the more difficult stages. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me."
Matthew Brennan is the boy who is amazed by his results but at the same time is not afraid to follow the wheel of the most powerful sprinters. Last year we saw him finish third at the Tour of Wallonia behind riders like Arnaud De Lie and Axel Zingle, but in the finale, he managed to pass riders like Jake Stewart and Luca Mozzato. It's in this 2025 that he has truly surprised everyone. After a second place in the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under, he won the Tour of 100 Communes and then the next day secured victory at the Grand Prix of the City of Lille (both 1.2 category races), and then after about ten days, he won first place at the Grand Prix Denain (1.PS category).
The big turning point, however, came with the Tour of Catalunya, where Brennan quickly arrived to replace his captain Jonas Vingegaard. Thus, the British rider, at the end of the first stage, starting and finishing in Sant Feliu de Guixols, found himself crossing the finish line first and wearing the yellow leader's jersey. "When the team called me to tell me I would have to replace Jonas, I was surprised because I'm not a climber, but I was proud to race for him". In Spain, he secured second place on the second day of racing and then another victory in the sixth stage, proving he has fully entered the ranks of the World Tour's strongest sprinters.
Brennan is known especially as a specialist in one-day races with a lightning-fast final sprint. The team has understood that his qualities are precious and, in addition to helping him win, considering his young age, they will pair him with important riders from whom he can learn a lot. Beyond having sprinter characteristics, Matthew Brennan could become an excellent Classics rider, considering that he has also shown he can perform well on cobblestones, and at Visma-Lease a Bike, where he has a contract until 2027, he will certainly have the opportunity to learn from great cyclists.
