UCI, AN EVEN RICHER PROGRAM FOR THE "GRAND MONDIALE" OF 2027 IN HAUTE-SAVOIE

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS | 15/04/2025 | 16:58

The UCI and the local organizing committee of the second edition of the UCI Cycling World Championships have today unveiled the details of the event, which will take place in the French department of Haute-Savoie from August 24 to September 5, 2027. The information was revealed during a press conference in Sallanches, France.

The event will bring together 20 UCI World Championships in 12 sites, with approximately 10,000 athletes (Elite and Amateur) representing over 130 nations competing for 13 days for the 281 UCI World Champion titles at stake. It is expected that around two million people will follow the competitions on-site, and the cumulative television audience should reach one billion viewers. Over 700 media representatives will be accredited for the event, supported by approximately 4,000 volunteers.

For comparison, the first edition of the UCI Cycling World Championships, held in 2023 in Glasgow and throughout Scotland (United Kingdom), brought together 13 UCI World Championships organized in nine venues, with the participation of 7,000 athletes (Elite and Amateur) from 131 nations. On this occasion, a total of 220 rainbow jerseys were awarded, and the competitions were followed by over one million spectators on-site and broadcast worldwide.

The complete list of UCI World Championships scheduled and the selected venues are as follows:

The dates for the various competitions have not yet been defined, although the Junior track events are expected to take place before the official event date.

The UCI Cycling World Championships for eSports, gravel, mountain bike enduro, pump track, and Junior track will make their first appearance within the UCI Cycling World Championships, while two new disciplines will have their first UCI World Championships in their history: indoor speedway cycling and bike polo.

The entire Haute-Savoie department will participate in the celebrations, and the races will take place in breathtaking settings, with exceptionally diverse landscapes characterized by iconic lakes and legendary peaks, such as the majestic Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe (4,806 meters above sea level).

The circuit for the UCI Road Cycling World Championships 2027 has also been revealed. The start and finish will be in Sallanches, and the main difficulty of the 13.3 km circuit (with an elevation gain of 285 m) will be the Côte de Domancy (2.5 km with an average gradient of 9.4% and a maximum gradient of 16%). Sallanches was the venue for the 1964 and 1980 UCI Road World Championships, and it was on the Côte de Domancy that French cyclist Bernard Hinault took off to win his only title in the Road World Championships (road race) in the Elite Men's category. Riders from all categories will follow the same circuit, with the only variation being the number of laps to complete. This concept marks a return to tradition and should encourage a record number of spectators to participate in the event.

The UCI President, David Lappartient, stated: "These combined UCI Cycling World Championships were part of my vision when I was elected UCI President in 2017. This vision became a reality in 2023 in Glasgow and throughout Scotland, and now we are building on what we created in Scotland, across an even broader range of cycling disciplines. I am pleased that this edition will take place in Haute-Savoie, a host region recognized for UCI events in various disciplines. Cycling in all its splendor will be celebrated in the French department".

The President of the UCI Cycling World Championships 2027 Organizing Committee and the French Cycling Federation, Michel Callot, stated: "This is an extraordinary opportunity for our French team to showcase themselves in all the disciplines on the program and thus illustrate the success of French cycling, which is very eclectic. We hope that the spotlight on France during this major event will encourage many young people to dedicate themselves to competitive cycling".

The President of the Haute-Savoie Departmental Council, Martial Saddier, stated: "Our ambition is to make these UCI World Championships a benchmark for inclusion, equality, and innovation, while offering spectators an unforgettable experience. As elected representatives of the Haute-Savoie Department, we are committed to making the event a popular festival accessible to all, exemplary and in line with our hospitality tradition, recognized throughout the tourism sector".
