SANREMO WOMEN, THE RETURN OF THE CLASSIC WOMEN'S RACE. GALLERY

WOMEN | 05/03/2025 | 13:49

Today, at the Liguria Region Palace in Genoa, the Sanremo Women presented by Crédit Agricole was presented, marking the return of the Spring Classic for women after a 20-year absence. On Saturday, March 22nd, on the same day as the men's race, the roads of Liguria - in the year it is the European Region of Sport - will welcome the world's best athletes for a highly anticipated event, as confirmed by its immediate inclusion in the UCI Women's WorldTour calendar. Among the big names already confirmed are the world champion Lotte Kopecky, Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini, and the winner of Strade Bianche Women Elite and Tour de France Femmes 2023 Demi Vollering.

THE ROUTE OF THE SANREMO WOMEN PRESENTED BY CRÉDIT AGRICOLE

The Sanremo Women starts from Genoa and crosses the Porto Antico elevated road to reach Sestri Ponente and enter the Aurelia state road. A few kilometers later, the race meets the professional race at Voltri and from there continues to the finish, retracing the road that for over 110 years connected Milan to Sanremo. It proceeds westward along the sea on the Aurelia state road through Varazze, Savona, Albenga until reaching Imperia. At San Lorenzo al Mare, after the classic sequence of Capes (Mele, Cervo, and Berta), the two climbs added in recent decades are tackled: Cipressa (1982) and Poggio di Sanremo (1961). The Cipressa covers 5.6 km at 4.1% to enter a very technical descent that returns to the SS.1 Aurelia.

9 km from the finish begins the climb of Poggio di Sanremo (3.7 km at less than 4% average with peaks of 8% in the section preceding the summit). The climb features a slightly narrow roadway and 4 hairpin turns in the first 2 km. The descent is very challenging on an asphalted road, narrow in some passages, with a succession of hairpin turns and curves until entering the Aurelia state road. The last part of the descent takes place in the town of Sanremo. The final 2 km are on long straight city streets. Notable is a left turn on a roundabout 850 m from the finish and the final curve 750 m from the finish that leads onto the final straight of Via Roma, all on asphalt surface.

Mauro Vegni, Cycling Area Director RCS Sport: "Liguria confirms itself as a central region for great cycling, and the connection with Genoa takes on an even more significant value after last year's Giro d'Italia stage start. The race's passage through three Ligurian provinces once again highlights the extraordinary vocation of this territory to host international events, showcasing its beauty and cycling tradition. We are proud to contribute to bringing back such a prestigious classic, which will offer the world's best athletes a unique scenario and a technical challenge worthy of its history".

Giusy Virelli, Sanremo Women Director: "The return of Sanremo Women is an important signal for women's cycling, which continues to grow and earn the space it deserves, as well as for the entire Italian sports movement. This race is not just a high-level sporting event, but represents a decisive step in recognizing the importance and value of women's cycling globally. Seeing the world's best athletes compete on the same roads that made the history of Milan-Sanremo is a strong and clear message: the future of cycling is increasingly inclusive and exciting. Our mission will be to offer visibility and enhance this event on a global scale".

Simona Ferro, Sports and Equal Opportunities Councilor of Liguria Region: "Milan-Sanremo finally doubles and does so, not by chance, in the year Liguria is the European Region of Sport. This is a historic return, long awaited by the territory and cycling enthusiasts. The Sanremo Women will allow us to promote sports, enhance the territory with its scenic wonders, and convey an important message on equal opportunities. Liguria, in 2025 and in the coming years, wants to be increasingly a region tailored to athletes, giving cyclists and champions of any discipline the same opportunities to challenge themselves and achieve important milestones".

Alessandra Bianchi, Sports and Tourism Councilor of Genoa Municipality: "With Sanremo Women, we are ready to celebrate a new debut for our city's sports calendar, a 'first time' that confirms and strengthens Genoa's great cycling tradition while highlighting how our city is consolidating its position as an ideal stage for major national and international sporting events. Accompanying the athletes in this special edition of the Classic will be an extraordinary setting that, I am certain, will provide them with indelible emotions and offer a 'postcard' image of our Genoa".

Alessandro Mager, Mayor of Sanremo, and Alessandro Sindoni, Tourism Councilor of Sanremo Municipality: "It is truly a pleasure to participate in the press conference presenting Sanremo Women, which allows our city to further strengthen the image return that the men's Classic has been ensuring for many years. On our streets, indelible pages of this sport have been written, thanks to the feats of great Champions of the present and past who have impressed their names on the prestigious race's honor roll. An unmissable appointment for all cycling enthusiasts and beyond who, as always, will witness the riders' passage along the route, particularly on the Poggio and in the final straight of Via Roma".

Penso che era difficile far fare quasi 300km alle donne,ma è un altro passo avanti per il ciclismo femminile. Anche la Parigi - Dakar mantiene il nome originale, ma non parte di certo da Parigi!
