FROM MANCHESTER TO PADOVA BY BIKE: LUCA FAVARO'S ADVENTURE TO BACK HOME

Some choose to cycle instead of driving or taking the train to work, a trend that is fortunately widespread and beneficial not only for health but for the environment. Luca Favaro, 52 years old and resident of San Giorgio in Bosco in the province of Padova, decided to do the same, using his two wheels, except that the job in question was in Manchester and the route was about 1800 km.

No fear, no commuter madness like the school janitor who traveled back and forth by train on the Naples-Milan route, Luca Favaro did something very different, following not only his passion for cycling but also sending a profound message. As he told the Mattino di Padova, he was in Manchester for a work assignment and once his four-month contract was completed, he shipped everything home while he returned by bike. By plane, the return would have taken just a couple of hours, but this way it became a true two-week adventure in which he covered 1800 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 14,000 meters.

After completing his assignment in Manchester, Luca reached London by train and then started a journey on his gravel bike. He pedaled on cycle paths and dirt roads following the Via Francigena, then crossed the English Channel by ferry and arrived in France, then Switzerland and finally in Italy through the Great St. Bernard Pass. He crossed four countries, exploring small villages and different traditions, not just as a way to do physical activity, but especially to challenge himself and his own limits. "It was a challenging journey with ten rainy days out of 14, but I held on; I stopped one day in Vercelli because of bad weather, then continued to Pavia and headed home, I would have liked to reach Rome," Luca told Mattino di Padova, suggesting that a new adventure might be just around the corner.

Luca Favaro is no stranger to bicycle-centered endeavors; for ten years now, during his holidays, he explores the world pedaling to discover new cultures and reaching very special places. In his cycling career, he has been in the desert, at the North Pole, and in 2022 he went from Treviso to Seville to promote a solidarity project dedicated to young hospital patients, in collaboration with Lilt. According to Favero himself, the bike ride from Manchester to San Giorgio in Bosco was the hardest of all, involving two weeks of effort, but above all, a uniquely special way of returning home.
