EVENEPOEL'S WINTER. VACCINES FOR RWANDA, NO TO GIRO, OK TO ROLLERS AND THAT SIGNATURE FOR THE TOUR...

The Cycling World Championships will be held in Rwanda from September 21 to 28 and one of the most discussed topics concerns vaccine prophylaxis and protocols against malaria.
To go to the heart of Africa, vaccines against yellow fever, hepatitis A, malaria, diphtheria, and tetanus are required, and some of these can have side effects, such as fever, pain, and exhaustion. Therefore, it will be important to choose the best time to get these vaccines. It should also be remembered that the malaria vaccine does not provide total coverage, leaving an uncovered percentage of possible infection of about 25-30 percent. So to protect against the famous fever transmitted by a mosquito bite, it will be important to take a medication: Malarone, which should be taken from one week before entering Rwanda until one week after.
Remco Evenepoel decided to get ahead of the game and has already completed the vaccine prophylaxis for going to Rwanda in September.
"The vaccinations have been completed - Evenepoel explained through an online interview with the press - The plan was always to do them this winter, and we never had any doubts about doing them".
Regarding possible side effects, the two-time Olympic champion wanted to reassure everyone, explaining that the disturbances were mild and that now this is a closed topic for him.
"I had some disturbances for only one night, but I didn't have many problems. Anyway, now everything is as it should be".
Remco Evenepoel underwent a series of checks this week to assess the situation of his shoulder after the December accident. Now he can start training on rollers, but will have to wait a few more weeks before going out on the road.
"I was in Herentals for the checks and I was given permission to begin my rehabilitation with a lot of physiotherapy and roller training. After an accident like mine, it is possible to resume training after eight weeks, so I can restart my preparation on February 3rd or 4th. I will also skip the next team retreat in two weeks: by that date, my shoulder will not yet be ready to absorb the impacts of training, and it would make little sense to go to Spain to do gym and train on rollers".
The Giro is completely off the table, and Evenepoel will probably make his seasonal debut during the Spring Classics. "We have completely swept away the Giro plan. My attention is entirely focused on the Tour, and the rest is secondary. I will return with the Ardennes Classics, starting with the Brabant Arrow (April 18). Immediately after, I might add the Tour de Romandie (April 29-May 4). Long altitude training camps will follow, then the Dauphiné (June 8-15) and the Belgian Championship (June 26 time trial, June 29 road race)".
At last year's Tour de France, Remco Evenepoel finished third behind Jonas Vingegaard and winner Tadej Pogacar. For the Belgian, it was his first participation, and in this 2025 he might settle for third place again, but on the condition that the gaps are smaller. Remco last year finished with a delay of 9'18" from Pogacar and 3'01" from Vingegaard, while Joao Almeida, fourth, arrived almost 10 minutes behind the Belgian.
"For the next Tour, if in the fine print it is highlighted that the gaps with Vingegaard and Pogacar will be smaller, then I could sign right now with my eyes closed. This would be another step in the right direction. Everything must improve, and then, I hope one day to win the Tour. We know what we need to work on to reach this goal".
