di Valter Nieri
A second four-year term is about to begin for Pierluigi Castellani after his reconfirmation as president of the Lucca provincial committee of the Italian Cycling Federation. In the Frezza Hall of CONI on November 22nd, a new chapter opened for the Lucchese manager after his unanimous re-election for the excellent work done that brought the province of Lucca to second place in Tuscany in terms of registered members somehow connected to the Federation. From 890 in 2021, at the beginning of his first term, the number has grown to the considerable figure of 1,164 in 2024. Castellani, of Sienese origins but transplanted to Lucca since his youth, has managed to revitalize cycling in Lucchesia during a very difficult time, especially in recruiting young people and making them fall in love with bicycles. Never confrontational, always willing to dialogue with everyone, he effectively covers the general responsibility of the technical-sports area and exercises top-level functions of a program aimed at cycling enthusiasts of all ages, but with an eye always inclined to entertain children with various dedicated events, fulfilling his task by dedicating himself full-time as a retiree. He rarely misses team presentations in the province and races in his area of competence. His commitment has managed to gather social solidarity by fulfilling his role in a balanced manner and in synergy with the needs of cycling societies.
"My passion for cycling goes back a long way. Even in my youth, I practiced volleyball and basketball with good results, but cycling was in my blood. I raced at Curiel in Grosseto during the times of Cesare Cipollini, Franco Chioccioli, and Cesare Gradi. I missed joining the athletes' group by just six points as a third-series amateur. Coming to live in Lucca at the age of 26, the bicycle has always been my main leisure activity. In 2003, I founded the Cycling Team Lucca, of which I still hold the presidency, to pedal in company. An amateur team present at many events nationwide."
A 2024 to frame for him, the president, full of satisfaction. "Especially from young people, on whom the Federation has directed significant economic resources, whose sector shows continuously growing numbers that seem to guarantee good prospects. In 2025, we reached 42 cycling societies in the province, one more than 2024, which was already slightly growing. The satisfaction was already great for having recruited many young cyclists, especially in Versilia after the Wild Billy Goat of Pietrasanta joined. For next year, we will have two new societies: the Tuscany Legend of Lucca and the Team Freedom Bike A.S.D. of Torre del Lago, the latter dedicated to organizing races for young cyclists with the prospect of also doing competitive activities."
