CYCLOCROSS | 17/12/2024 | 08:10 Last Sunday, Gerben Kuypers suffered a collarbone fracture during the fourth Cyclocross World Cup race in Namur. The cyclocross specialist from Charles Liégéois Roastery CX was successfully operated on at Herentals hospital on Sunday evening and is forced to end his cyclocross season prematurely.He will begin his recovery path and prepare for his return to road racing with the World Team Intermarché-Wanty. Gerald Ackerl, the Belgian team's doctor, explains: "Gerben Kuypers suffered a left collarbone fracture and was treated with surgery in the evening. The operation was successful, Gerben feels well and was discharged yesterday from Herentals hospital. He will observe a week of rest and should be able to gradually resume roller training next week. Consequently, he is forced to end his cyclocross season with Charles Liégéois Roastery CX, but we expect him to recover in time to be ready for the next team training camp in Alicante with the World Team in January". Gerben Kuypers adds: "After the camp with Intermarché-Wanty in Alicante, I felt good to tackle the World Cup in Namur, an important race for our Walloon sponsor Charles Liégéois Roastery. And I managed to confirm this with an excellent start to the race. Together with Kevin Kuhn, we were fighting at the front of the race for the podium, until my crash midway through. With my sports director Bart Wellens, we went straight to AZ Herentals, where I was able to undergo surgery four hours after the fall thanks to the excellent follow-up of the Intermarché-Wanty medical staff. Everything went well, I spent a good night, which is a first step towards the beginning of my rehabilitation. It's another serious setback after last winter's problematic season. But I want to put things into perspective, I will shift my focus to my road season with the World Team, for which I have high ambitions".
