34 WORLD CHAMPIONS AND ALL OF CYCLING SAY THANK YOU TO HUGO COOREVITS, THE JOURNALIST RETIRING

pippo Belgium is the home of cycling, a country where on Sundays, children go to watch a race. Cycling is a difficult sport, and one must be skilled and have courage when deciding to become a journalist and tell the stories of those men who fight for kilometers to win a victory. Among these is Hugo Coorevits, one of the most talented sports journalists, who for over 40 years has chronicled the feats of all the greatest cyclists in the world. Hugo Coorevits turned 65 and it was time for him to say goodbye to the newspaper that had always been his, namely Het Nieuwsblad, the most important Flemish-language Belgian daily that, for almost 100 years, has reported what happens in Belgium and the rest of the world.
Het Nieuwsblad, in its sports pages, has daily reported on national and international cycling, with important in-depth coverage and exclusive stories, and Hugo Coorevits, with his extraordinary qualities and passion, has been able to tell of victories and tragedies, as well as the private lives of the most important cyclists. Hugo Coorevits, a journalist appreciated throughout the sports world, retired on Saturday, but he didn't know that his newspaper had organized a surprise party with a truly unique gift to thank him for his many years of service.
Waiting for Hugo on his last day as a journalist at Het Nieuwsblad were Eddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens, Johan Museeuw, and Lotte Kopecky, who presented Hugo Coorevits with a world champion jersey signed by 34 world champions.
Among the many signatures were those of Mathieu van der Poel, Julian Alaphilippe, Remco Evenepoel, Tom Boonen, Mark Cavendish, Gianni Bugno, Rik Van Looy, Joop Zoetemelk, Bernard Hinault, and Marianne Vos, who gladly participated in Hugo's gift for his wonderful career.
Hugo Coorevits has always followed races from the road, accompanying various champions through the mud of cyclocross and the stones of the Classics in Belgium. He has followed 25 Tour de France by car, and it's impossible to count the kilometers he has traveled and the interviews he has conducted. It is difficult in this profession to find people as generous and available as Hugo Coorevits, and the riders themselves speak of him as a trusted man, capable of keeping secrets and honoring agreements.
Hugo has now left Het Nieuwsblad, but his passion for cycling cannot be set aside, and for this reason, albeit in a different way, Coorevits will continue to remain in the world of two wheels, surrounded by the respect and gratitude of all the people who, for over 40 years, have been fortunate to work with him or be interviewed by him.
