FAREWELL TO JOS LAMMERTINK, A CHAMPION BETWEEN PAIN AND COURAGE

di Benjamin Le Goff
At just 66 years old, defeated by a degenerative muscle disease, the former Dutch professional Jos Lammertink passed away yesterday afternoon. From a young age, he had already distinguished himself by winning the Dutch national title among amateurs and was among the few cyclists to win the tricolor jersey in road, track, and cyclocross in the highest category.
Among professionals, in addition to the national title in 1986, Lammertink won stages of the Vuelta a España, the Mediterranean Tour, the Ruta del Sol, and the Vuelta Valenciana. His palmares also includes the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne in 1984.
A few days ago, his biography titled "De Reus van Wierden" was published, in which he confessed, among other things, to having suffered sexual abuse by his coach when he was a junior.
"It was a serious trauma that has been half a century old. It was a very heavy burden to carry, it was hell to remain silent about what happened, because I was terribly ashamed," he recounted.
Turning professional in 1980, he defended the jerseys of HB Alarmsystemen, B&S Wegenbouw-Elro Snacks, Vivi - Benotto, Panasonic, TVM-Van Schilt, and TVM-Van Ragno. Shortly after retiring from competitive cycling, he was struck by a rare degenerative muscle disease that recently chained his body, allowing him to move only his head.
