Il 5 ° Gala di ciclismo UCI si è svolto oggi a Guilin, in Cina, riunendo numerose star del ciclismo su strada professionistico maschile e femminile, tra cui il Campione del mondo Mads Pedersene tanti campioni iridati del paraciclismo su strada. La cerimonia ha chiuso idealmente la stagione 2019 con una nota festosa, celebrando i momenti salienti dell'annata e premiando i corridori che si sono distinti.

Come negli ultimi due anni, l'UCI Cycling Gala ha avuto luogo poche ore dopo la fine del Gree-Tour del Guangxi e del Tour of Guangxi Women's WorldTour a Guilin, nel sud della Cina. Queste due gare hanno chiuso rispettivamente l'UCI WorldTour e l'UCI Women's WorldTour.

Tra i premiati anche Victor Campenaerts, detentore del Record dell'ora. È stato inoltre assegnato un Premio Fans - sulla base di un voto organizzato sulla pagina Facebook dell'UCI - per il video virale della stagione. Il premio è andato al video dei Beefeaters dedicato ad un gruppo di sostenitori britannici che guidano un gruppo multinazionale di spettatori in una danza improvvisata sul col du Galibier durante la 18a tappa del Tour de France.

Infine, la famiglia di ciclisti ha onorato Greg LeMond (USA), premiandolo con il Trofeo del Presidente dell'UCI per celebrare il 30° anniversario del suo secondo successo al Tour de France e il suo mondiale.

Dopo la cerimonia, il presidente dell'UCI David Lappartient ha dichiarato: “Vorrei congratularmi calorosamente con tutti coloro che hanno ricevuto un premio durante questa magnifica cerimonia. Tutti hanno contribuito notevolmente al successo della stagione e non vediamo l'ora di rivederli sulle strade nel 2020. Vorrei anche ringraziare il nostro partner Wanda Sports per l'organizzazione dell'UCI Cycling Gala 2019, nonché la Chinese Cycling Association per il suo supporto”.

The 5th UCI Cycling Gala took place today in Guilin, China, bringing together numerous stars of men’s and women’s professional road cycling, including the Men Elite road race UCI World Champion Mads Pedersen (DEN), winner of a race contested in atrocious weather, as well as the UCI World Champions for road para-cycling. The ceremony brought the 2019 season to a close on a festive note, celebrating the highlights of the discipline over the last 12 months and rewarding riders who have stood out.
 
As in the last two years, the UCI Cycling Gala took place a few hours after the finish of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi and the Tour of Guangxi Women’s WorldTour in Guilin, in the south of China. These two races closed the UCI WorldTour and UCI Women’s WorldTour respectively.
 
As well as the UCI World Champions recently crowned during the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire (Great Britain) and the athletes and teams who finished at the top of the UCI World Ranking (Men Elite) and the different UCI Women’s WorldTour rankings, the athletes crowned at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Emmen (the Netherlands) and the new holder of the UCI Hour Record timed by Tissot also received trophies at the ceremony.
 
A Fans’ Award was also attributed – based on a vote organised on the UCI Facebook page – for the viral video of the season. The prize went to the Beefeaters’ sequence.  This shows a group of British supporters leading a multi-national group of spectators in an impromptu dance to some euro-pop music on the col du Galibier during the 18th stage of the 2019 Tour de France.
 
Finally, the cycling family honoured Greg LeMond (USA), awarding the 58-year-old with the UCI President’s Trophy to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his historical UCI Road World Championships – Tour de France double, achieved in 1989. With this award, the UCI wished to give wider recognition to a champion for his exceptional career.
 
In total, 17 prizes were awarded during the 2019 UCI Cycling Gala.
 
After the ceremony, UCI President David Lappartient said: “I would like to warmly congratulate everyone who received an award during this magnificent ceremony. All made a major contribution to the success of the past season, and we look forward to seeing them on the roads again in 2020.
