
Sofie van Rooijen won the Shanghai/Chongming, the second and longest stage of the Tour of Chongming Island. After 128 flat and windy kilometers, the 23-year-old Dutch rider from UAE Team ADQ, last year's U23 European champion, defeated Mia Griffin (Roland Le Dévoluy) and Elisa Balsamo (Lidl - Trek) in a sprint finish.
The peloton remained compact for most of the stage, with a surge occurring when four athletes broke away: Giulia Giuliani (Roland Le Dévoluy), Marina Komina (Li Ning Star), the mountain classification leader Anne Knijnenburg (VolkerWessels) and Catalina Soto (Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi). The Chilean rider couldn't maintain the pace of her breakaway companions and was dropped, eventually being caught by the peloton, which was reported to be 32" behind with 12 kilometers to go.
A few kilometers later, the peloton led by UAE Team ADQ and Liv AlUla Jayco first caught up with Knijnenburg and then the other escapees, definitively neutralizing their attack in the last 2 kilometers.
The wide final avenue favored the sprint
