Lenny Martinez celebrates his first victory in the Bahrain - Victorious jersey at the finish line atop the Côte de Notre-Dame-de-Sciez, where the fifth stage of Paris - Nice concluded today. With a final burst in the last 100 meters, the 21-year-old native of Cannes preceded his compatriot Clément Champoussin (XDS Astana Team) and Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). The American returns to the top of the general classification on the day when Jonas Vingegaard suffered due to a crash about 80 kilometers from the finish line.
In the stage characterized by seven Cotes, the most important action of the day saw the 20-year-old French rider Thibaud Gruel (Groupama – FDJ) and Ben Swift (INEOS Grenadiers) leading for about 90 kilometers before being caught by Tobias Foss (INEOS Grenadiers) 42 kilometers from the finish line.
As fatigue began to make legs heavy, Swift and Gruel lost Foss's wheel, who, 30 kilometers from the finish, near the top of the Côte de Chavagneux, increased his pace, remaining alone at the front with the group 1'00" behind.
The Norwegian crested with a 40" advantage also at the Côte d'Arzay and subsequently conquered the Intermediate Sprint with bonifications at km -13.
With the final wall on the horizon, Campenaerts from Visma Lease a Bike and Pedersen from Lidl Trek brought the group back to Foss, nullifying his beautiful action.
