"My legs are trembling, this award moves me." A visibly emotional Domenico Garbelli is the one who, on Saturday at the gates of Brescia, received the Golden Helm, a recognition that ADISPRO has assigned him for 2024, handed over by re-elected president Davide Goez and Alberto Volpi. Bergamo by adoption, born in 1943 and from Lodi, Garbelli has led teams and riders for over 60 years. "I was 20 when I started, now I'm 82 and I won't renew my membership." A silence loaded with respect fell in the room while the Italian Sports Directors listened, in religious recollection, to the intervention of the dean. A sign of great admiration for a historic figure in cycling, who shared some episodes of his long career and reflections on rules still valid today. "I couldn't tell you how many victories, how many riders, or how many professional transitions I've experienced. I've always been a man of few words, and rarely have I found myself talking as much as today. With my riders, often, a few phrases were enough. I preferred not to discuss immediately after the race: better to let some time pass and compare notes on Monday, when one is more lucid." A career studded with successes and emotions. "The greatest one concerns a rider I didn't personally direct: Mirko Gualdi. In 1990, in Utsunomiya, Japan, he won the Amateur Road World Championship with a long-range action. An incredible memory." For Garbelli, some values have always played a central role. "Respect is the basis of everything. I have always tried to behave correctly with riders and opponents. From some colleagues, very competitive on the field, I perceived mutual esteem; from others, less so. I also consider myself an innovator, especially in research. For example, we often went to the Sports Medicine Center in Turin. As a team, we were ahead of the competition, and this has always been a distinctive trait of mine." In the room, there were also some Sports Directors who started as his athletes: Bevilacqua, Algeri, Elli, Piva, Fidanza, Parsani, Volpi, and many others.
