The professional cycling careers of Sven Erik Byström and Martin Urianstad Bugge come to an end after twelve and seven seasons respectively among the professionals. As announced by Uno-X Mobility, both riders have made the decision to retire now and move to the team car of the Norwegian formation starting next year.
"The decision to quit was not easy, especially considering that I still had one year left on my contract. However, I gradually came to understand that this was the right moment. Being a professional cyclist means making many sacrifices: countless hours of training, attention to diet, and exposure to great risks during races. Now I can't wait to prioritize my family and spend more time with my wonderful wife and my two little girls" said the 2014 U23 World Champion, who was admired as a professional wearing the jerseys of Katusha, UAE Team Emirates and Intermarché-Wanty before joining Uno-X.
"I've lived half of my life as a cyclist and over the last eight years I've raced with Uno-X. It's been an extraordinary journey and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world" said Bugge instead, who was forced to undergo surgery on his iliac artery in 2024, after which he was unable to return to his previous level.
Both he and Byström (appreciated domestique and career winner of only the national road championship in 2020) will therefore free up two spots in the Uno-X Mobility 2027 roster, a team where they will nonetheless continue to put their experience at the service of younger riders working as sporting directors.
"I hope to be able to put to good use the experience and knowledge I've acquired as a rider in this new role. I have much to learn, but under the protective wing of the excellent sporting directors we already have in the team, I know I'm in good hands" said Bugge about his move to the team car.
"I hope to be able to pass on some of my experience, especially to the younger riders, and to help the team in races that I've already faced during my career" said Byström instead, ready like his teammate to keep the Uno-X name high by guiding those who will defend the orange-red colors on the road towards new successes.
"I'm very happy to be able to stay in the Uno-X family. I've already spent countless days traveling around the world with this team and now there will be many more" declared an enthusiastic Bugge. "The Norwegian-Danish atmosphere that you breathe in the team is something special, and there's an extra sense of pride in representing Uno-X Mobility around the world" explained Byström, who, despite only arriving in the Scandinavian outfit last year, immediately felt that warmth and unity that over the years have led Thor Hushovd's men to achieve one success after another.
