Tom Pidcock was in the spotlight on the roads of the Tre Valli Varesine, where he claimed second place behind Widar, but he also made his voice heard decisively in the aftermath. Especially because during the race, his two teammates Marcel Camprubí and Thomas Gloag were hit by a police motorcycle. An incident that Pidcock addressed after the finish, as evidenced in the statements collected by domestiquecycling and later also in the press release issued by Pinarello Q36.5.
«It was a somewhat more unpredictable day. I'm happy that in the end we managed to fight for the podium. It wasn't an easy race; at the start we had to race on our own. We told ourselves: 'We must not let ourselves get isolated'. Mark (Donovan) did an excellent job controlling the situation independently and managing the gap from the breakaway riders: it was quite large, 6-7 minutes, but then UAE stepped in to lend a hand. Unfortunately, what happened next was that a police motorcycle was traveling the wrong way on the course and hit two of our guys. At that point... First of all, I wanted to stop the race, to stop racing. I was furious. I had teammates pedaling in front of me, for me, and then two of them ended up on the ground. Fortunately, Marcel was fine and was able to continue. Tom was also fine in the end, but he withdrew and had to get stitches on his knee. Things like this shouldn't happen. However, we continued, we got back into the race and I'm happy to have made it onto the podium. It's a shame not to have won, but I'm really pleased. Widar put in an impressive sprint, so chapeau».
The British rider's next appointment will be the Lombardia: «Winning is always the goal, but getting on the podium is not bad at all. Im approaching the weekend with confidence, I believe it will be a very open race: we are ready for the challenge».
