From October 14 to 18, Shanghai will host the Elite Track World Championships, the first appointment of the new path leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Italy is building on the 2025 World Championships in Santiago, Chile, which concluded with three medals: gold in the women's team pursuit and Elia Viviani's gold in the elimination race, plus bronze for Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini in the Madison. The world championship will take place at the Shanghai Velodrome, on Chongming Island. 21 athletes have been called up on the recommendation of Technical Commissioners Diego Bragato, Ivan Quaranta, Edoardo Salvoldi and Marco Villa.
Returning to track racing after a period dedicated mainly to road cycling are Filippo Ganna and Jonathan Milan, who, together with Simone Consonni and Francesco Lamon, formed the quartet that won gold at Tokyo 2020 and bronze at Paris 2024. They are joined by a group of very young athletes who in recent months have shown they can already compete at high levels, such as 19-year-old Alessio Magagnotti, 20-year-olds Davide Stella and Etienne Grimod, and 21-year-old Matteo Fiorin.
Among the women, the Olympic Madison champion pairing is reunited: Vittoria Guazzini and Chiara Consonni. In the team pursuit, four of the five Italian world champions from last year in Santiago will be present: Martina Alzini, Chiara Consonni, Martina Fidanza and Vittoria Guazzini. Federica Venturelli is absent due to injury. Rachele Barbieri, Elite world scratch champion in 2017, also returns to the World Championships.
Regarding the sprint sector, the World Championships in China, which awards the first points in the Olympic qualification pathway, represents an important test for a group of young athletes already prominent in recent years at international events, to which is added 18-year-old Filippo Cusumano, junior world bronze medalist in team sprint and a standout performer following his transition from BMX to track cycling.
