As already announced, UAE Team Emirates-XRG will bring nothing less than world champion Brandon McNulty, who will be making his second official outing in the rainbow jersey after yesterday's Giro dell'Emilia, but will not wear the number 1, which will instead go to the defending champion and teammate Adam Yates. The Briton was one of the last-minute additions and will thus have the opportunity to defend his crown, but also keep an eye on Jhonatan Narváez, winner of 3 stages at the Giro d'Italia and perfectly suited, in terms of characteristics, to the Agostoni course.
In light of what was seen at the Montreal World Championships, the Emirati team, which will be chasing their 4th consecutive victory, will need to watch their backs against a determined Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), American national champion and 4th in the elite road race at the Worlds. Alongside him is also Tao Geoghegan Hart, winner of the 2020 Giro d'Italia and seeking redemption after a rather complicated period.
However, there are several well-equipped teams that can count on multiple cards to play. Jayco AlUla will rely on Mauro Schmid and Andrea Vendrame, climbers who are also quick in a sprint finish, just as XDS Astana will have the former pink jersey Thomas Silva, Simone Velasco, 3rd last year, and the young and increasingly convincing Alessandro Romele—a truly enviable trio.
Also worth noting are Filippo Zana and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step), Carlos Canal, 2nd last year, and Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar), the always dangerous Norwegians of Uno-X Mobility, particularly with Sakarias Løland, recent winner of the Trofeo Matteotti, and Alexander Kamp, Francesco Busatto (Alpecin-PremierTech) and Walter Calzoni (Pinarello Q36.5).
Decathlon CMA CGM will instead rely on the always solid Paul Lapeira, accompanied by American climber Matthew Riccitello. Also noteworthy is the presence of Émilien Jacquelin, a 31-year-old Frenchman, Olympic champion and 5-time world champion in biathlon, who this year has changed direction, dedicated himself 100% to cycling and Decathlon is giving him a chance at the highest levels.
THE COURSE
A winning formula doesn't change: this year too the Coppa Agostoni - Giro delle Brianze will have its nerve center in the City of Lissone which, as tradition dictates, will serve as the backdrop for both the start (set on Via Bottego with km 0 located on Via Catalani) and the finish of the race, located on the straightaway of Via Matteotti. In total, riders will cover 166.7 kilometers on Sunday, October 4th, a day when Brianza fans and enthusiasts will certainly make their warmth felt on the roads affected by the race. The latter in particular, after an initial flat section of about 20 km, will come alive along the renowned Lissolo circuit, a 28 km loop—to be repeated 4 times—characterized by the climbs of Sirtori (1500 m at 4.9%), Colle Brianza (3.8 km at 6%) and Lissolo (5.4 km at 4.3%). Climbed in succession, these ascents could inspire continuous attacks and thus create decisive selection before the final 35 kilometers which, on predominantly flat terrain, will lead the athletes to the finish line in Lissone.
TV SCHEDULES
Despite the overlap with the Ljubljana European Championships, the race will be viewable live on Rai Play from 3:40 PM, with coverage scheduled until 5:15 PM, but also on demand on Discovery+ and HBO Max channels. It will also be live on the Lega Ciclismo YouTube channel with the same times.
On Rai Sport there will be a replay at 10:40 PM on Sunday, October 4th, and then another on Monday, October 5th at 2:00 PM, just before the live coverage of the Coppa Bernocchi.
