The official announcement will come today, on the rest day of the World Championships, but the news has already leaked out and - most importantly - has already started to generate controversy. The UCI is about to introduce a fifth jersey for the grand tours and for a number of stage races. The jersey will be created to reward the best rider from the host country.
This jersey will be awarded in men's and women's World Tour races: it will join the leader's yellow jersey, the points jersey, the best climber's jersey and the best young rider's jersey.
The decision, as mentioned, will be officially announced at the UCI Congress in Montreal but it has already sparked controversy: according to Escape Collective, professional men's and women's teams have collectively voted against the proposal and the AIGCP - the International Association of Professional Cycling Teams - opposes this initiative, citing concerns about reduced visibility for team sponsors' logos on the new jersey.
Despite this, the agreement will pass and teams are expected to receive compensation in return, including additional hotel rooms and VIP tickets for races.
