There is a double world title to chase, but in Remco Evenepoel's thoughts the Giro d'Italia is beginning to make room for itself once again. The anticipation comes via social media from Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport: obviously there is no date circled in red on the calendar yet, there is no decision made and, above all, neither Remco's schedule nor the Giro route are yet known. But the idea is there.

2027 could be the year of the Belgian's return to the roads of the Giro d'Italia. At 26 years old, the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe rider has already tackled the three weeks of the Grand Tours multiple times, collecting results that tell the story of his champion status: a Vuelta a España conquered in 2022 and two podiums at the Tour de France, third in 2024 and second in 2026. The Giro, however, has remained an unfinished story, made up of two participations and just as many withdrawals.

The first experience dates back to 2021, to his absolute debut in a Grand Tour just months after the terrible crash at the Giro di Lombardia: Remco was a major protagonist in the first weeks, then was forced to withdraw after 17 stages, with two fourth-place finishes as his best result. Two years later, in 2023, Evenepoel was among the great favorites for the final victory, but on the evening of the ninth stage - wearing the Maglia Rosa and having won the time trials in Ortona and Cesena - the shock came: a positive Covid test forced him to leave the race.

Since then the Giro has remained outside his plans mainly because the Tour became his primary objective. The Giro d'Italia, however, remained there, like a page still to be written, but after four years a possible return to the Giro would have a completely different flavor. And if the Belgian were to face it as world champion, it would be even more special...

For now it is only an idea, a possibility still to be evaluated. 2027 is still far away and the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe program will be drawn up during the winter training camps in Spain. But the Giro, after two interrupted chapters, has returned to Remco Evenepoel's horizon. An idea, a suggestion, a simple thought? The pieces that still need to find their place are many, any prediction risks being premature, so for now let's trust a feeling: the idea is there.
