Eleven days after the serious crash he suffered at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, the condition of Ezra Caudell remains grave, although Modern Adventure (the team with which he turned professional this year) has reported that some small steps forward made in recent hours offer hope for his full recovery.

While remaining in intensive care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital due to conditions described as "critical", yesterday the nineteen-year-old from Acworth showed promising signs by being awakened from the deep sedation in which he had been, "thus allowing his family and medical team a much clearer assessment of his neurological condition".

This became necessary because, as stated in the note released by his team, "in the crash Ezra sustained significant injuries, including a concussion and severe thoracic trauma", problems that led the medical team treating him to proceed with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (known in technical jargon as ECMO) to address his respiratory deficiencies.

Thanks to this solution and the quality of the care he received, Caudwell has slowly begun to improve his condition to the point of being able to communicate again with his loved ones, who have never left his side over the past ten days.

"While his medical team remains focused on supporting his recovery from these injuries, his progress in recent days has been encouraging. Despite the severity of his wounds – in keeping with his personality – after waking up Ezra didn't waste much time before resuming jokes and sending short videos to his teammates. His ability to interact, communicate, and recognize those around him has been a particularly welcome and encouraging development", Modern Adventure communicated.
