After yesterday's time trial, there are only two opportunities left for those wanting to overturn the general classification, and this alone makes the 19th stage of the Vuelta a special day: on the agenda is the Velez-Malaga - Peñas Blancas, Estepona route of 211.4 km with 4,190 meters of elevation gain. A stage that Fernando Escartin, who designed it, describes as "undulating with a mountain finish".

The first part of the day will be completely flat, then around km 80 things change: at km 91 comes the Puerto de las Abejas, a 2nd category climb measuring 15 km at 4.3% and in rapid succession arrives at km 111 the Puerto del Viento, another 2nd category climb, this time 13 km at 3.7%. Long descent, 15 kilometers of flat terrain and then comes the final climb, Peñas Blancas, 1st category, 18.7 km at 6.5%.

It's the classic stage that could present two races in one: on one hand the breakaway of a more or less large group of attackers going for the stage win and on the other hand the battle between the general classification contenders concentrated on the long final ascent. Also because, as mentioned, there are only two days left for those wanting to challenge Mas or in any case improve their position in the general classification.
